The enduring popularity of Scooby Doo and his gang of mystery busting sleuths have spawned a steady stream of adventures since their debut in far off 1969. Originally titled 'Scooby Doo where are you?', the first two seasons contained 25 episodes which usually consisted of the gang arriving at a remote location or small town where they would investigate and solve a crime which was being committed under cover of supernatural goings on.

These were followed in 1972/73 by a further 24 episodes under the title 'The New Scooby Doo Movies'. These series' introduced a weekly 'guest star' to each story, a feature that was to have unfortunate consequences to later Scooby Doo collectors when Warner Home Video was unable to negotiate agreements with several of these, leading to some episodes becoming unavailable on DVD.

The on going popularity of re-runs and the occasional introduction of new characters such as Scrappy Doo resulted in the production of a series of direct to video movies from 1998; the first purpose made Scooby Doo movies. Retaining the animated format of the original series, one movie per year was produced beginning with ' Scooby Doo on Zombie Island ' followed in 1999 by ' Scooby Doo and the Witches' Ghost '.

Well received by critics and the public alike the animated series of movies led in 2002 to the release of the first of the live action movies, entitled 'Scooby Doo’. Starring a computer generated Scooby Doo with Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne, Freddie Prinze Jr as Fred, Mathew Lillard as Shaggy, Linda Cardellini as Velma and directed by Raja Gosnell, the movie was a commercial success, taking over $130 million at the box office. A sequel ' Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed' followed in 2004 with the same cast and director, grossing over $84 million.

Whilst the Scooby Doo franchise continued in animated form with the yearly produced direct to video movies and the TV series' 'What's New Scooby Doo?', 'Shaggy and Scooby Get a Clue!' right up to the 2010 introduction of 'Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated' we had to wait until 2009 for the next of the live action Scooby Doo movies. With a new cast and director, ' Scooby Doo the Mystery Begins' took the story back to the time when the gang meet up at high school and was a well received straight to TV movie. This was followed in 2010 by a further live action movie ' Scooby Doo - Curse of the Lake Monster'.

Needless to say Scooby Doo movies are widely available to buy on DVD and blu ray, with the live action movies being particularly good value, often to be found as a two movie collection for a few dollars. The direct to video movies build into a great collection which will keep all ages entertained, with a wide variety of storylines and worldwide locations. Why not treat yourself to the original animated series? These can be bought cheaply in their original individual series'.
